You Already Know How to Read Tarot

post by Michelle Amethyst Mahoney, Spiritual Badass

woman reading Tarot 180The Tarot can be very intimidating for people who are first learning. Trust me, I know – it took 7 years before I started listening to my own intuition and definitions of the cards. But that was because I didn’t have anyone to tell me that it was okay to find my own meanings.

So today, I am going to tell you if a meaning jumps out at you for a card, it is OK to go with it. You already know everything you need to know to start reading the Tarot right now.

How can I say that? The Tarot is made of symbols that everyone from every culture has learned for thousands of years. Anyone who looks at a heart already has meanings associated with it. A wand is also a familiar concept, and even seeing a bunny or squirrel will evoke certain ideas or thoughts.

Look at the card below from the Rider-Waite-Smith deck. What are these people doing? What are they thinking or feeling? Put yourself in the card – talk to them, become them. Tell a story about it. It doesn’t matter if it “seems” right or not. What matters is that it feels true to you.

6 of cupsWhat do you notice in this picture? What does it remind you of? How does it make you feel?

Maybe it reminds you of a childhood friend, and you feel nostalgic.

Perhaps you notice the boy giving the girl flowers, and you wish your husband would bring you home flowers or be more romantic.

Perhaps you see all of the vases around, and how everyone on the cards looks happy, and you long for a simpler time, when things were easier.

Notice how all of these definitions have one thing in common – they depend on the person and her situation. Each interpretation is correct as long as it rings true for the person receiving the reading.

Now it’s your turn. Choose a card and see what meaning it has in store for you. Let me know in the comments below.

And the World Moves On

Do you ever feel like that? Like no matter what you’re dealing with, the world just moves on oblivious to your problems? Well of course it does! You can’t really expect it to do otherwise. But sometimes it kind of sucks knowing that you have this shit going on and nobody knows or cares that it’s happening.

dwellThat doesn’t mean that nobody would care, chances are that someone would if you just told them about it. I know that’s hard to do sometimes, believe me I know. When I have shit going on, I just don’t want to communicate with anyone, I just want to deal with my shit alone; I tend to withdraw. Some of that comes from not wanting to bother anyone with my problems, I usually feel like a whiner when I talk about my shit, so I normally don’t talk about it.

The thing about that is if you don’t tell anyone, they can’t help you. I recently read an article about a couple in Ohio who felt so desperate over their own situation that they ended up committing suicide together. None of their neighbors even knew they needed help, many of them said “if they would have only asked, we could have helped them”.

Imagine how alone they must have felt not thinking they could tell their friends and neighbors about their situation. While reading the article, I felt how they must have felt because I’ve been there before myself; thinking there was no way out but death.

Some people think that suicide is cowardly, but it’s really not, it takes a lot to make the decision to end your own life. You weigh everything over and over again and question everything over and over again, knowing that the decision is final, that you can’t go back once it’s done.

But there is always someone who would be willing to help, if you just ask. It may not even be someone you know; it might be a stranger on the other end of the phone at a hotline. It may be clergy at a local church (even if you don’t belong to the church, most clergy will still be willing to talk to you). It may be your next door neighbor or it may even be a “friend” on Facebook.

And if you’ve tried to talk to people and haven’t found anyone to listen, keep trying! Eventually you’ll find someone to listen. Even if you can find just one person, just one, who will listen, then you’ve taken the first step. They may not be able to solve your problems but they might be able to help you to realize that you’re not alone and that things can get better, no matter how desperate they may seem at the time.

So please, please talk to someone if you feel you only have one way out. You matter and someone out there loves you, even if you don’t know who they are yet.

What to Write When You Don’t Know What to Write

questionsI found myself struggling all day today about what to write. I know I don’t have to write anything but I want to and it shouldn’t be that difficult, I mean I only write once a week, right?

I thought I had an idea this morning (you know those shower time epiphanies that you can’t remember after you’re dressed?) It was going to be this, trying to be bold – here I am, I’m here, this is me! Then it kind of morphed into how many people there are out there trying to sell you their “guaranteed” program that will make you millions, or make you the most popular person on the web, or the most enlightened, or have the biggest email list. That nobody can help everyone because we’re all different and one process might work for one person but might not work for another.

I’ll admit even I can’t help everyone, and that’s okay because I don’t want to help everyone, can you imagine how exhausting that would be? Then my focus shifted to being authentic and what that means and being authentic doesn’t mean you’re perfect it just means you’re not pretending to be someone you’re not. Like those bubbly, shiny, happy people that are never down even if their puppy got squished by a steamroller – I could never be that, ever. I did have a job once where I was expected to be that but, yeah, that didn’t work out so well.

So then I thought well, maybe I’ll talk about what’s going on in my life, like how my last remaining dog has a tumor that’s pretty much inoperable and probably cancerous but there’s no need to find out for sure because she’s 14 now and even if I knew for sure it was cancer I wouldn’t put her through the ordeal of treatment. And how my husband doesn’t support me in trying to build a business because he thinks everything I do is stupid and I just need to have a “real” job like everyone else.

Then I could also talk about a TV show I was watching last night that had a woman on who was calling herself a psychic and I thought “how am I, or anyone like me, supposed to be able to build a business around being psychic when there are these kooks making us all look bad?” You know, talking about crazy shit like Dungeons and Dragons monsters that are supposedly real. Really?

Or I could also talk about how being visible has been a real struggle for me because I’ve never wanted attention, it’s always made me feel uncomfortable. Maybe it’s because attention that I got when I was very young was beyond inappropriate so it made me not want any attention at all. But then I need to be visible in order to do the work I do so I keep struggling even though I frequently retreat (what’s that all about anyway?) only to have to pull myself back out there again. Like two steps forward, five steps back.

Then I saw this quote today: “You have seen my descent, now watch my rising.” ~ Rumi

And I was like, wow, that just summed up my life for the past year or so and it made me cry.

So here I am, I’m here, this is me!

Why Affirmations Don’t Always Work

Affirmations can be a powerful thing. They can help you to feel better about yourself and be more self-accepting, they can help you to be more confident and to be more positive, they can help you to realize that you are capable of doing anything you set your mind to and be more successful. And who doesn’t want to feel confident or be more successful, right?

succeedFinding an affirmation to use isn’t that difficult, either, they abound all over the internet; on blogs, in articles, on social media, in ezines and newsletters, in self-help books and transformational program materials. I’m sure you’ve probably used a few yourself, I know I have.

But I’ve recently come to realize that the way an affirmation is worded is a key factor in whether or not it will give you the result you want. You see, everything has an energy vibration, including the words you use, and the universe picks up on that vibration and creates, or doesn’t create, based on that vibration – the whole Law of Attraction thing. So, if the words you’re using don’t have the right vibration, you’re probably going to be disappointed.

For instance, I’ve been using the affirmation “I always have more than I need” for quite some time. The thing is, what I have hasn’t changed much during that time. I wonder why? It’s because the words I was using are static. Let me explain – saying that I always have more than I need is basically saying “what I have now is more than I need, so I don’t need more”. So the universe is like “okay, you’re good, moving on”.

What I really should have been saying (and will from now on) is “I am always receiving more than I need”. See the difference? The word “receiving” has movement, it has flow and adding “always” makes it constant. So there is a constant energy flow. And the universe says “okay, you’re always receiving more, here you go, here’s even more”.

You can even feel the difference physically. Notice how “I always have more than I need” feels; it’s stagnant, it feels heavy, like a huge lump of clay just sitting there. But “I am always receiving more than I need” feels light, it feels airy and free like a bird gliding through the air.

So be mindful of how you word your affirmations. Think about the results you want and what the best way would be to express your desire in order to get those results. Remember, your words have energy vibration and you want to match the energy of your words with the energy of what you desire.

You Don’t Have to be Christian to Talk to Angels

Or any other religion, for that matter!

Angels do not associate themselves with any particular religion because religion is really a man-made premise. They were created by God/Goddess/Divine/Source to serve a specific purpose. You can connect to them and communicate with them no matter what your religious beliefs are (even if you have no religious beliefs at all!).

Let me tell you a little bit about them.

white-angelYou may not know that there are actually different levels of angels, called “choirs”. Each choir has a certain purpose such as working directly with God, working in the cosmos, or working directly with humans. They are beings of light who will appear to us in a form that they know will be comforting and not frightening, such as the typical winged human-like figures you’re probably most familiar with.

The angels we are most connected with are the archangels and our own guardian angels. There are many different archangels but a few that are more well-known, such as Michael who is associated with strength and protection, or Raphael who is associated with healing. The specific purpose of archangels is to help humans in their daily lives. Each archangel has their own “job” to do and they also have their own associations with color and gemstones.

Our guardian angel’s purpose is to help protect us individually. Guardian angels are here for a specific person, throughout their life, from birth to death. So each of them always only helps one person. Whereas the archangels are here to help everyone and can be in many places at once as they are needed.

While it is possible to connect to other levels of angels, most of us will only be able to connect with the archangels and guardian angels, which is really all we need.

If you’d like to learn even more about the angels, and how you can connect with them, I’m offering a free training on April 14, 2015 to teach you more about how to do just that. Just hop on over to my Intro to Archangels registration page to register for the call!

Connect to the Voice of Your Soul

Earlier this month I offered a free training on the Akashic records and how you can get resolution and healing by accessing them; in case you missed it, here’s a bit of a recap.

akashicThe Akashic records, also known as the Book of Life, is a vast collection of all human consciousness which is located in the hall of records and wisdom. The word “akashic” is derived from the Sanskrit word “akasha” which means “sky” or “space” or “aether”, which is what all cosmic consciousness is made of.

Each one of us has our own record, or book, that contains information about our past, present, and future as well as all of our past lives. Now think about that – every one of us has a record there; that’s billions of people, billions of souls!

Now, of course this collection of records isn’t located in a physical space, it’s actually located on the astral plane. The astral plane is another plane of existence of unlimited expansiveness, it’s the plane that your soul crosses through on the way to being born and after death.

The records are watched over and governed by the lord of the akashic records and the akashic record keepers. These beings allow you access to the records and help you get information from them. They may appear to you in any form, such as beings of light, spirits, animals or other forms that may be comfortable to you – they don’t want to freak you out or scare you.

One very important aspect about accessing the records is that you must get permission from anyone whose records you want to access; otherwise you’ll get garbled information or no information at all. This is one of the jobs of the record keepers – keeping people from going where they don’t belong. They’ll lock you out like nobody’s business – because it’s not your business unless you have that permission slip.

Another thing to keep in mind is that you must raise your vibration level in some way, such as meditation, physical activity, or using certain crystals, in order to access the records. Once you’ve raised your vibration level, you generally recite some sort of prayer or invocation to request access.

The way the records appear is different for everyone and, in my experience, can also change depending on whose records you’re accessing. You might see a huge library or a cozy sitting room; you may see actual books in different colors or some other images that represent the information you’re looking for.

There are also different vibrational levels that can be accessed to get information. However, with the work I do, I actually access a much lower level, what I call the shadow level; think of it as the “basement” of the records, if you will. This allows me to go much deeper and get to information that has been suppressed or even unknown completely.

I have those skills that are needed to access the records for you and to help decipher the information that comes through, which is especially valuable when the answers you get are not straightforward. I can look at this information intuitively in order to give you more clarity around what comes up. I also have experience communicating with the record keepers so I’m able to easily get clarification on what comes up.

I’m sure you’re probably wondering how this process is different than a basic intuitive reading. With an intuitive reading, you’ll get answers to your questions, and maybe some guidance and action steps but you may not get to the root cause of the situation. And an intuitive reading doesn’t give you the process of clearing and moving out the energy that’s involved; a Soul Journey is more of an energy healing process than a basic intuitive reading.

Remember, we’re working on the astral plane here, so you’re getting the energetic shifts along with the physical shifts which gives you a more complete process and a more complete transformation. We work on the cause of what’s going on instead of just treating the symptoms.  The first step starts with getting to the root of things and then going from there.

So, if you feel like there’s something going on in your life right now, that you’re having difficulty understanding, I can be your guide to accessing your records and getting answers. This in-depth journey will not only give you answers but will give you the next steps you need to take in order to move forward and resolve your situation. You’ll get real, actionable guidance that you can begin to work on immediately after the call. And the “homework” that you get helps to integrate the clearing of the energetic with physical.

Are you ready to take that journey? You can book your session with me [here], then we can have that conversation with your soul and your shadow to get you back on track.

Are You Getting the Message?

There are many different ways our spirit guides and angels, or even loved ones who’ve passed, use to communicate with us.

One thing to keep in mind about looking for messages – if you see something only once, it may not always be a message; think about the current situation and consider whether or not something you’re seeing is a message. Sometimes it is, though, sometimes you only need to see something once in order to get the message.

Here are a few things to keep an eye out for, some you may be familiar with and may have even noticed yourself.

black-featherFeathers – this is one of the most common ways to receive a message, especially when you’re feeling particularly down, to let you know you’re not alone.

Ringing in the ears – a very common way for angels to give you messages; when you hear your ears ringing, pay close attention to everything going on around you to see if anything significant is showing up.

Dreams – loved ones and guides often come to us in our dreams because that’s the time when we’re most open and it’s easier for them energetically to communicate with us.

Coins – finding coins is another way for angels and loved ones to communicate with you; when you find a coin it can mean you are being watched over and protected or any money issues may be resolved soon.

glitter-butterflyButterflies – some cultures believe that butterflies represent death and when you see one or more it signifies loved ones letting you know they’re okay.

Repeating numbers – seeing certain numbers in sets of three, such as 222 or 444, are another way angels send you messages to let you know you are loved and supported.

Colors – seeing certain colors repeatedly can also be a sign of angels or loved ones sending you a message. Angels resonate with specific colors and use this as a way to connect with you; loved ones may be showing you their favorite color to let you know they’re around.

Of course there are many ways to get messages from your guides, angels, and loved ones, these are only a few. Some ways to know if what you’re seeing is a message are:

  • Is there something going on in your life right now that you asked for guidance on?
  • Have you been thinking of a loved one a lot lately, who’s passed?
  • Have you been having financial or relationship difficulties?
  • Are you thinking about making a career change?

Any number of things could be the reason for divine messages but sometimes they just want to let you know that they love you and they’re there for you whenever you need them.

Creativity is Key to a Healthier Life

It’s true! Studies have shown that doing something creative can benefit you in multiple ways from having less stress and less anxiety to having lower blood pressure and better problem solving skills.

art-of-intuition-blogThe ways creativity can be expressed are endless! It can be a physical activity like dancing or performance art or a more passive approach like painting or drawing. Just like there are many ways of expression, there are many techniques to choose from as well.

For example painting – there are the typical options such as watercolors or oil paints, or there are acrylics, guache, tempera, India ink, or even finger paints!

With drawing you can use basic graphite, or colored pencils, charcoal, and even watercolor pencils.

The list can go on and on. Then you have other types if media such as clay for pottery or sculpting, stained glass, woodwork, and of course don’t forget digital media.

Then you have journaling or creative writing, because writing is creative too – poems, stories, a novel, or a simple blog.

Like I said, there are so many ways to create that it would take me days to write about them. The point is that with so many options you’re bound to find at least one that fulfills you, that makes you forget about everything else, that helps you tune in to your soul so you can feed it and make it soar, so that you can connect with it and get to know your true self better.

Having a relationship with yourself, with your soul, is the most important relationship that you can have. Because, well, it’s who you really are at base level. When you’re connected to your soul, everything in your life becomes easier, freer, more enjoyable.

We tend to focus so much on the physical, and our physical existence that we forget that our physical form is only temporary. Yes, it’s important to take care of our physical form, absolutely!

But we need to start taking better care of our souls because that is the part of us that is immortal, that is divine, that never dies. Some believe that we only have one life to live but in reality we only have one soul. So feed it! Take care of it! Nurture it! In every way you can.

It’s kind of easy for me to talk about being more creative to connect to your soul, because I’m creative by nature – I started drawing when I was in my early teens. I went to art school, I taught myself how to knit, I learned how to dye yarn in beautifully painted colors. Creating things is a huge part of my life.

So, of course, creating a workshop is a completely natural thing for me to do, especially when it’s a workshop ABOUT creating! Awhile back I was laying in bed and the words “The Art of Intuition” just came to me, out of the blue. And I knew it was important, that I needed to do something with that.

It’s taken me awhile to really put it all together but now it’s been birthed, so to speak. I created this workshop because I really want to share with everyone how important being creative is and how you can get that better connection with your soul through artistic expression.

It’s not even the final piece that matters so much, it’s the act of creating, the bringing something new into your world, something that didn’t exist until you thought it and made it real. That’s the bit that’s really important.

I’d really love for you to join me – yes, you, the one reading this right now because you have a soul too, a soul that matters! And I really want to help you get connected, or re-connected, to it in an amazing way.

We start on April 6, 2015 and you just need to hop on over to The Art of Intuition page to register!

Crystal Corner – March 2015

crystal corner

This month’s crystal is amethyst. Amethyst is another very common crystal and is a purple variety of quartz, so it is also a silicate mineral. The name is derived from the ancient Greek meaning: a (not) – méthystos (intoxicated). This reference is related to the belief that the stone prevented drunkenness in its owner; ancient Greeks often wore it for this reason.

amethystLike clear quartz, amethyst can be found in many forms including points, clusters, and carved items as well as cut gemstones. The purple color is a result of irradiation as well as iron impurities, and other trace elements present in the crystal. Amethyst naturally occurs in various shades from pale pinkish violet to super deep violet. This stone is often used in jewelry and is graded, as any other precious gem is, so pricing varies greatly depending on the quality.

Amethyst occurs in many different locations throughout the world but the best quality stones can be found in Siberia, Sri Lanka, and Brazil. It is sometimes found layered with clear quartz, which is called banded or chevron amethyst (these stones combine the properties of the two crystals). Some inaccurately refer to green quartz as “green amethyst”, this mineral is more correctly called Prasiolite. Synthetic amethyst is created by irradiating clear quartz after the ferric impurities have been removed. Amethyst is also commonly heat treated to produce synthetic citrine.

Amethyst is aligned with the third eye chakra as it enhances intuition and psychic abilities. It is also a stone of calm and balance which makes it excellent to use during meditation. Although it isn’t the best stone to use for prosperity, it can help with money and abundance issues.

It is another master healer stone that can be used for psychic protection, emotional healing, loss and grief, as well as addiction issues and protection while traveling. Other ways it can be helpful are for past life regression, clairvoyance, and angel communication. Since it is known for its metaphysical properties, it is an excellent crystal to use in crystal grids.

Next month I’ll talk about another form of quartz – rose quartz.

Sharing Trinkets

Last week I talked about a few things that can lead you to self-discovery. One of them was to start a trinket box. I started one when I was in high school and I wanted to share what’s inside.

The box itself is a tin that apparently had soap in it at one time (or maybe not). A girl I was friends with had it on her dresser and I thought it was cool so she gave it to me. I’ve been adding little things to it here and there over the years. Most of it I don’t even remember acquiring.

So here’s the low-down – bits from one (or maybe both) of my sister’s baby shower cakes:

A couple of key chains – the little car has moving wheels:

Some dead flowers, I’m pretty sure the carnation is from my mother-in-law’s funeral but I don’t remember where the rose came from:

Bits and pieces – some seashells, a rabbit’s foot, a weird blue eraser, a hair band, the back of a watch, a tiny nut, a jewelry bail, a tiny embroidered carrot:

Some buttons, pins, and coins – that gold coin is actually a gift certificate of sorts from a jewelry store in Tucson that no longer exists:

Some more pins – I think I got them at a NASCAR race in Phoenix – a little lock that goes to a tin savings bank I think I still have (?) – don’t know where the key is though; the wooden “coin” is a business card from a vendor that I visited at the 4th Ave Street Fair one year (man, I miss Tucson!):

A goldstone pendant, a little crystal, a photo charm of one of my nephews, my class ring, and a maple leaf pendant (yes, it IS a maple leaf) that I borrowed from a friend when I was in high school – time went by and we moved on and I never returned it to her (sorry Angie, I’ll give it back when I see you again, I promise):

My charm bracelet I got in San Diego and the one and only charm I have for it – a tiny orange crate with little “oranges” inside:

I little purple box, some tiny purple dice, a gold anklet with my name engraved on it, a four-leaf clover I found somewhere that I “preserved” between two pieces of scotch tape (the dice, anklet, and clover leaf live in the little purple box), a pair of dice valve stem covers that I bought for my motorcycle but decided not to use because, a) they’d throw off the balance of the tires; and b) someone would probably steal them:

So that’s about it! I’d love to hear what treasures you’ve added to your trinket box so far. Drop me a little note below and let me know!
